Coming on stage Mr. Casado said that the aim of his association is to promote Family Businesses which are categorized as Small and Medium enterprises, mentioning that having being so successful in their fields these enterprises have being called "Hidden Champions". There is an idea to create a similar association in Greece as well. Together with Professor Simon they developed and categorized each company being in the first and up to the third position in their field of activities, recognized as such either in Europe or worldwide, having a turnover over 3 million Euros without being very well known. Mr. Casado mentioned several examples such as companies in Island dealing in fishery or in other fields in several countries being leaders without being
known. Today 1300 of these Family Businesses are in Germany, 366 in the USA, 220 in Japan, 11 in Spain and so on. All are middle sized companies, best in their sectors and mainly exporting. Mentioning exports, Mr. Casado said that China is world's number one, followed by USA in second position, Germany at third and Japan as number four.
Germany owed this position due to its "Hidden Champions". Germany has strong capacity, important industry and most of the German companies want to be globally present.
Although made in Germany in the very beginning was not a positive label, today it means high quality standards.
"Hidden Champions" are companies which create jobs, have massive ways of innovation, give values and have ambitious goals, willing to stay at the top. They do not focus on diversification but on their products and clients. These companies produce one product but it has to be the best one.
Research and development is also a very important issue. They create export opportunities and 75% of these companies which dispose the above mentioned characteristics are family companies. These companies are devoted to their clients maintaining close contacts with them. Concerning their leadership these Hidden Champions have a particular leadership being very careful in taking risks, relying mostly on self assets, not depending very much on bank loans.
They also do much more with the less possible employees who are committed to their company. Mr. Casado finished his interesting presentation saying that these Familly businesses are efficient working in a totally different way than the big multinational. "They do things in a different way using close and down to earth models. Their CEOs remain in general for more than 15 years in office. About 59% of them are still managed directly by the family and their challenge is to pass the ownership from generation to generation" Mr. Casado said concluding his presentation.
Business Lunch of the Hellenic Spanish Chamber of Commerce _ Tuesday the 11th of March at 14:00h at Fuga Restaurant (Kokkali 1, Athens 115 21).
Speaker: Mr. Margaritis Schinas, European Commission Resident Director, Head of the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs (ECFIN) Athens Office. Speech: "Greece, from crisis to growth - a European perspective".
The members of the Hellenic Spanish Chamber of Commerce meet with Mr. Margaritis Schinas, Director-level head of the Athens office of the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN) of the European Commission.
During an informal business lunch organized at "Fuga" restaurant, on Tuesday, March 11, the members of the Hellenic Spanish Chamber of Commerce had the opportunity to hear Mr. Schinas' speech on the European Financial Perspective and thoughts to overcome Greece's crisis.
Mr. Schinas started his speech stating that the European and Greek economic crisis started in 2008, although the roots were not European. The crisis was created in the US due to two main reasons: the excess of liquidity and the lack of financial supervision. Shortly the crisis became global and affected the European continent due to different problems. First; Europe was under the illusion of a genuine EMU: Actually only a monetary union was achieved but not an economic one, neither a federal way for decision making. Second the rules under the Stability and Growth Pact demanded by Euro area members had been repeatedly violated. As a result of these problems the crisis affected mainly the eakest links of the chain with two common sets of problems: on one side Greece and Portugal, due to their low competitiveness, huge bureaucracy high debt and deficits and from the other side Ireland and Cyprus because of their disproportionate financial sector that placed an unsustainable burden on their economies:
The above, according to Mr. Schinas, were the main reasons of the fire that propagated across the Euro zone. The solution was to act as firemen to put out this fire at the periphery and simultaneously as architects who would try to build a genuine Economic and Monetary Union architecture. This crisis response proved successful so far. The cohesion of the Eurozone was assured and Europe is currently developing an integrated policy approach to a Fiscal; a Banking and a Political Union.
Turning to Greece's situation, Mr. Schinas mentioned that the country has the biggest "bailout" in history with 245 billion euros!. Greece had the luck to count on the assistance of the euro zone family members when was cut off from the financial markets.
The country is expected to have a primary surplus this year and latest growth forecasts point to 0;9 and 2,4% growth rates for 2014 and 2015 respectively.
Mr. Schinas suggested Greece must now translate this progress to the real economy staying the course of fiscal consolidation and structural reform. This would facilitate the development of a productive economy with product markets reform and targeted investments to growth enhancing sectors like tourism and agro food. . The country would also need to pursue with its ambitious program for privatization. Finally there is a huge need for structural reforms, to fight against corruption and to complete the civil service reform.
Schinas showed to be much more optimistic now than he was before summer 2012. He sees signs of recovery stating that all achievements were possible due to the political stability of the country. Maintaining political stability and ownership of the Greek programme will continue to be crucial factors in view of the important decisions ahead he concluded.

Following, Mr. León referred to historical facts relating to the region and explained the current situation (social and political,) in Middle East. He underlined the important role of Egypt for the stability in the region and precisely explained what is happening in Egypt nowadays. He referred to the activities of the Muslim Brothers, the attitude of former President Morsi and the circumstances that led to the military coup. He explained that only an agreement with the opposition party could create the conditions for overcoming the country's political and economic challenges and avoid further confrontation, and described the everyday situation in the streets of Cairo. Mr. León supported that, actually, the citizens of Egypt should take their own decisions for recovering democracy. He dwelled on investments, since the presence in the country of European investors will be vital for its recovery. Then, Mr. León presented the tough conditions in other conflicting countries in the region, such as Libya, Iraq and Syria, underlining how divided those countries are and what is the EU position towards the extreme
reality experienced in the area. Concerning Syria, Mr. León said that both USA and Russia should organize a peace conference, as at this stage dialogue could be the most adequate solution.
